Everyone knows Candlemas (88% know about it and 80% love it), but we often forget the date. However, it remains the same every year = February 2nd, 40 days after Christmas Eve according to the Catholic tradition.
Where does the tradition of pancakes come from? According to popular belief, pancakes represent the sun and eating pancakes on this day would be a tribute to the rebirth of nature, the cycle of the seasons and more precisely to the coming spring!
78% of French people intend to celebrate Candlemas and for 84% it is a time for sharing with family. And yes, it has become a popular holiday celebrated by a large majority of French people.
Distributors are rubbing their hands with this festival which is now on 2ème the peak of activity at the beginning of the year behind Epiphany.
However, it is an event that tends to be forgotten and that needs to be reactivated in the minds of consumers. This is why the "Crêpes en fête" committee was created 15 years ago by an association of manufacturers. It now includes brands such as Francine, Lustrucru eggs, Béghin Say, Lactel and Loic Raison.
For some of them, activity is twice as high as normal. Some references see their rotation multiplied by 6.
Now it remains to be seen whether you will eat sweet or savoury pancakes. 91% of French people prefer pancakes and 21% the salty ones.
In 40% of cases, they will be eaten at snack time and 33% at dinner!
When they are sweetened, the French prefer butter and sugar (65%), jam (65%), spreads (54%), fruit or whipped cream (25%).
Get your frying pans and make the pancakes jump!
