A real institution in the USA, this day of exceptional promotions ("Black Friday") has been coming to France for a few years.
Last year, the phenomenon gained momentum and made a thunderous entry into consumer habits. For example, the 144 million was spent ! 29.4% of consumers reported having made purchases that day or 14.98 million shoppers. The most purchased products were clothing, followed by multimedia, toys, perfumes, home decoration, household appliances, food, video games and chocolates.
But what is Black Friday anyway?
It is a day of crazy promotions held the day after Thanksgiving, a real tradition that goes back to the 1960s in the USA. In the United States, it is a sales accelerator (between 3 and 5% of additional revenue). In 2014, $51 billion was generated in the USA on this day with 133.7 million consumers!
This day helps to boost consumption, which is often frozen by the anticipation of Christmas shopping.
Why the term 'black'?
There are 2 meanings =
- This refers to the crowds of people in the streets. The shops and streets are 'black' with people
- This also helps to get out of the "red". In the past, accounting was handwritten = red meant losses and when the accounts were profitable, they were written in black.
For 2015 ....
According to the latest survey, 75% of French people plan to participate !
In a context of economic crisis and low purchasing power, this day represents a real opportunity for consumers and shops. This event marks the start of the year-end shopping season with promotions of up to 70%.
So are you going to enjoy it too?
